How I Missed the Qatar F1 Grand Prix Because of A1 Visa Delays

I missed the Qatar F1 Grand Prix because my A1 tourist visa got delayed.

Recently, many travelers have been getting frustrated with Qatar’s visa delays. Visa statuses are remaining “pending” for days, and in some cases, even weeks.

Before we go deeper, it’s important to understand that Qatar visas used to be processed extremely quickly. I have personally applied for Qatar visas multiple times, and every single time, the entire process, from application to receiving the visa in my email, took less than 24 hours. Sometimes, it even took two hours.

I’m writing this based on my own experience.

I was one of the frustrated travelers, anxiously waiting as my application remained stuck in “pending” as I had planned to attend the Qatar Airways F1 Grand Prix, an event I had planned and was looking forward to for months.

I’ve always admired how smooth the Hayya platform used to be. It is the main e-visa platform for Qatar, and since it launched in 2022 during the World Cup, it has processed over 2 million visas.

But recently, something has changed. Delays, weak communication, and unhelpful support responses are slowly watering down what used to be an excellent system.

The Current Frustrations with Hayya

When you call the support team, the response is always the same scripted line:

“Just wait. And make sure not to make any travel arranagements until you get your e-visa on email”

And honestly, how do you “just wait” after spending thousands of dollars on flights, hotels, or event tickets?

While waiting for my own visa, I did some digging. What I found were hundreds of frustrated travelers looking for answers, many of whom lost money when they had to cancel reservations. Me being one of them!

Possible Reasons for the Delay

While Qatar hasn’t released an official explanation, here are some possible causes that I think could be causing the delays:

  • High influx of applications
The number of applications seems to have increased significantly, overwhelming the existing team. And especially during high peak seasons such as winter, or a period with major sporting events like the F1 or football tournaments.
  • Small or limited processing team
It feels like the resources behind Hayya may not be enough to handle the current volume.
  • Tighter visitor controls due to overstays
The government may be slowing approvals to improve migration control. There are many people who have overstayed or abused some of the laws prompting the government to be cautious when looking at applications from countries that have high numbers of violaters.

So, How did I cancel my plans?

It was a difficult descision but it had to be done.

  • I lost the F1 tickets as these were non refundable.
  • Canceled my Booking.com reservation. Luckily it was free to cancel. I always book hotels that allow for free cancelation.
  • I also canceled the flight tickets after paying a hefty cancelation fee.

Looking ahead, something urgently needs to change.

Whether it’s rejecting visa applications early or providing realistic timelines, travelers deserve clarity.

How to Protect Yourself as a Traveler

So that you do not end up losing money and being frustrated, here are a few things you can do:

1. Apply at least 2 months before your trip

The A1 tourist visa is valid for 3 months from the date of approval. Applying early gives you:

  • 1.5 months for processing
  • If it gets approved immediately, you still have 1 month left out of the 3 months, to enter Qatar, plenty of time for most tourists

2. Do not book non-refundable flights

Pay slightly more for flexibility. It’s better than losing hundreds of dollars.

3. Choose hotels with free cancellation

Many travelers have lost money here, avoid this mistake. Always filter for hotels that allow for free cancelation.

4. Consider using an agent

Some agents have faster success, but they often require:

  • Booking flights through them
  • Booking hotels through them
  • Paying for the entire trip arrangement

Most agents do not accept visa-only applications.

I genuinely believe Hayya can do better. There’s so much potential, and travelers who can’t get a visa-on-arrival still want to visit beautiful Doha and experience everything Qatar has to offer.
