When traveling to any city, transport is a major consideration. While in Dubai, you have a couple of options to choose from including RTA taxis and Uber. But which one is better?

In Dubai, the cost of taking a taxi versus using Uber can vary based on several factors, including distance, time of day, and any surge pricing that Uber may implement. Here’s a general comparison:

RTA Taxis

  • Base Fare: RTA taxis in Dubai have a base fare that starts around AED 5 during the day and AED 6 at night. There is a minimum fare of about AED 13.
  • Metered Rates: After the base fare, taxis charge approximately AED 1.82 per kilometer, with additional charges for waiting time.
  • Availability: Taxis are widely available throughout the city and can be hailed on the street or booked via their app.

RTA taxis are government-regulated and widely available, making them easy to find across the city. They are typically yellow with a touch of green and have a taxi roof sign. These taxis are well-maintained, very clean, and equipped with excellent air conditioning. The government also regularly replaces older taxis to uphold high standards of service and quality.

Uber

  • Base Fare: Uber also has a base fare, which can start around AED 7-10, depending on the service (UberX, UberXL, etc.).
  • Per Kilometer Charge: The per-kilometer rate for Uber can be higher than that of taxis, especially during peak times when surge pricing applies. For the basic Uber, the per-kilometer rate is about AED 2.38.
  • Convenience: Uber offers the convenience of app-based booking, which can be more user-friendly for tourists as they already have the Uber App.

However, Uber is usually not the first choice for many residents of Dubai. That title goes to Careem, a Dubai based super app that is used mainly to order rides as well as for food delivery.

Is Careem cheaper than Uber in Dubai?

Most times, the price difference is negligible But on some occasions, Careem tends to be cheaper. Careem has the same base fare as Uber of between AED 7 and AED 10. Careem’s per-kilometer rate is about AED 2.35.

However, for longer trips, Uber is preferred as their prices will not change because of traffic or taking longer to get to your destination.

Careem has a minimum fare of about AED 20 while Uber’s is about AED 15.

So which one is better and cheaper?
