On 15th December 2024, Etihad Airways landed at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport at about 1:30 PM for the first time since the COVID 19 pandemic.
Etihad had announced its plans to resume flights to Nairobi sooner but faced major delays from Kenyan regulatory authorities. However, earlier this year (2024), the Abu Dhabi-based airline made it clear that they will be coming back mid December and ran offers that allowed tourists to book flights to the UAE from as little as Ksh 40,000 ($350).
Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) Board Chair, Caleb Kositany welcomed the guests at the tarmac.
In a statement released to the press, KAA in part said:
“We are thrilled as Etihad officially resumes flights to Nairobi, enhancing connectivity between the UAE and Kenya.“
Arik De, Chief Revenue and Commercial Officer at Etihad Airways had this to say:
“The introduction of our Nairobi service enhances our growing network while responding to strong travel demand between the UAE and Kenya, as demonstrated by today’s completely full inaugural flight. As both Abu Dhabi and Kenya experience remarkable tourism growth and set ambitious targets for the future, this route creates valuable opportunities for both destinations. The service strengthens the important ties between our regions, supporting Abu Dhabi’s position as a global aviation hub while providing enhanced access to Kenya’s thriving tourism market.“
Kenya has experienced a surge in airlines adding the country to their routes, aiming to cater to the growing number of travelers that the nation is expected to attract in the near future.
Etihad will operate four times a week, as shown in the table below, and will be using an Airbus A320-232, which has one aisle and a 3 – 3 configuration.
